First trade edition, 4to, full navy blue cloth with gilt titling and decoration to front cover and spine. 30 color tipped-in plates by W.Heath Robinson on cream-colored boards with printed borders. Printed tissue guards. 60 illustrations in line, some full page. The color plates include symbolic representations using women as goddesses depicting the far-flung colonies of the English empire at that time: Bombay, Singapore, Capetown, Madras, as well as celebrating British sea-going prowess and bravery.This was a popular title, one of Robinson's most well-received, and went through several subsequent editions but with reduced size and fewer color plates. Corners well-rubbed, a faint scratch to front cover, gilt nice and bright, a near fine copy without previous owner's marks. Item #37627
