Both are illustrated by Norman Price, an illustrator known for his authentic period costuming and highly detailed artwork, among the very best illustrators of historical drama. Best known for his early weird fiction like The King in Yellow], Chamvbers wrote many historical novels later in life.
Rogue's Moon features 19 full page plates in gouache plus pen & ink vignettes. First serialized in Liberty magazine in 1928, Chambers praised Price's work, stating that the illustrations added the vital spark to his writing. Set around 1700 in Colonial America, the story portrays notorious historical pirates Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet, and female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read.
The Happy Parrot features 26 full page plates in gouache plus pen & ink drawings. Set in the 17th century, the story follows the maritime and global travels of a young French protagonist navigating high-seas adventure, seafaring life, and historical conflicts of the era. First published in1929, this was so popular the publishers commissioned the illustrations and did this entirely new, illustrated edition in 1931. Hint of wear to the spines, with very slight fading to one, one plate in Rogue's Moon partly seerapated, else near fine. Item #37564
