Peter Poodle, Toymaker to the King

1906. Bradley, Will. 1st ed. Bound in green-tan paper covered boards, with a red cloth spine strip. Pictorial cover in red, black, white and flesh. Frontis and title page designed by Bradley and numerous Bradley two-color illustrations throughout. Decorative initials and tailpieces also by Bradley, as well as the attractive map double—page endpapers. Full color frontispiece. Bradley also designed the type, known as "Bradley Italic," for this edition. It was later sold for use by the American Type Founders—Bradley was their art director until 1905. He became art director for Colliers Magazine in 1907, and for six other magazines, including Good Housekeeping, from 1910 to 1915. See Bambace, Will Bradley: His Work

An amazing book, arguably Will Bradley's finest and certainly his most prolificly illustrated. The cross-over influence from Maxfield Parrish to Bradley is evident throughout. A delightful children's tale. Due to the delicate nature of the paper-covered boards, this is not a children's book that survived much handling, making this an uncommon title.

Boards are well chipped at the edges and somewhat darkened although the spine titles, printed in black on cloth, are fine. Occasional thumbing to pages. Still, a solid copy in a good tight binding of a marvelous edition. Item #30451
